Precision Reading
We are hosting a new and exciting program this year. We have received funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to implement Precision Reading. Precision Reading is a new, inexpensive, short, daily, research-based reading activity that quickly improves participants’ abilities in reading automaticity, word recognition and comprehension and passage comprehension.
Precision Reading was developed by Dr. Rick Freeze, Professor of Inclusive Special Education at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Education, in collaboration with inclusive special educators and classroom teachers. The method has proven effective for reluctant readers, low achievers, at-risk students, non-readers, and students with attention, learning, and intellectual disabilities.
There are ten components to Precision Reading:
- A profile to assess who needs Precision Reading and to track participant progress over time.
- Three levels of reformatting to adapt classroom reading materials without sacrificing vocabulary, content, or relevance to classroom instruction and the curriculum.
- A core reading strategy, used at every daily session to build reading fluency.
- A word practice procedure to build a large sight word vocabulary through a visual memory strategy.
- A choice of three retelling comprehension strategies to teach and support participants with reading comprehension and information retention problems.
- A variety of support strategies to engage participants to expand their sight vocabularies and read passages fluently with comprehension.
- Graphing of daily progress.
- A system of long term record keeping monitoring progress and contributing to participant evaluation.
- Achievement reinforcement to initiate, maintain, and enhance positive attitude, commitment, and engagement.
